Construction, Curious Pets + Chicken Bones: Pet Safety During Home Renovations

You know how life has a way of throwing surprises at us? Apparently, our four-legged friends are experts at finding them.

Recently, one of our pet sitters arrived for a routine visit and spotted something unusual.

A gate that had always stayed securely closed stood wide open.

Luckily, she noticed it before letting the pup into the backyard. The dog stayed safely inside, and we avoided what could have turned into a much bigger problem.

That little moment reminded us how quickly renovations, landscaping projects, pool work, deliveries, and even regular yard maintenance can change the environment around our pets.

And our feline friends aren’t innocent either!

One of our cat clients recently decided that packing tape from an organization project made the greatest toy ever invented.

  • The crinkly paper caught her attention.
  • The cardboard boxes became a playground.
  • Bubble wrap provided endless entertainment.
  • And those dangling strips of tape? Apparently irresistible.

Unfortunately, tape can stick to paws and tails. Cats can also chew and swallow it, which can lead to a very sick kitty—and a very frantic human.

And then there was the typical Florida “Publix Fried Chicken Incident.”

  • A client’s contractors enjoyed lunch in the backyard.
  • One sneaky chicken bone ended up hidden in the grass.
  • Of course, the family dog found it immediately.
  • Because dogs apparently have a sixth sense for forbidden snacks. 😂
  • Thankfully, our sitter spotted the chicken bone before the dog could turn it into an emergency vet visit.
  • These little adventures reminded us of something important:

Pet safety during home renovations takes teamwork.

Our team always checks gates, fences, yards, and the general environment when we arrive for a visit. However, we weren’t there when the contractors, landscapers, delivery drivers, or repair crews changed things.

That means we may not know what changed since the previous visit unless you tell us.

Home Projects Can Create Unexpected Pet Safety Risks

When workers come into your home or yard, they may not know your pets’ routines or the things you normally watch for.

  • A contractor sees a gate.
  • You see the gate your dog knows how to squeeze through.
  • A landscaper sees mulch.
  • You see something your puppy may try to eat.
  • A worker sees a leftover chicken bone as trash.

Your dog sees THE BEST SNACK EVER.

Here are a few things that can unexpectedly create problems during construction, renovations, landscaping, or other home projects:

🐾 Open gates or fence panels
Workers may open gates to move equipment, materials, or themselves through the yard and forget to close them.

🐾 Tools and construction debris
Nails, screws, zip ties, wood pieces, and other debris can injure paws or become dangerous if a curious pet eats them.

🐾 Food scraps and trash
Chicken bones, wrappers, cigarette butts, and other discarded items can quickly become tempting—and potentially dangerous—snacks.

🐾 Chemicals and landscaping products
Paint, fertilizers, pesticides, mulch, cleaning products, and other materials can create serious risks when pets can access them.

🐾 Open doors
Delivery drivers and contractors may leave doors open or unlocked while carrying materials inside or outside.

🐾 Changes to familiar spaces
Construction can block hallways, move furniture, change yard access, or create strange noises that confuse or stress your pets.

How You Can Help Us Keep Your Pets Safe

A little communication can go a long way.

✔️ Tell us about upcoming construction, repairs, landscaping, pool work, or other major projects.

✔️ Let us know about temporary gate changes, workers coming and going, or areas your pets cannot access.

✔️ Give the house and yard a quick walk-through before leaving town.

✔️ Tell your contractors, landscapers, pool companies, and other workers about your expectations for pet and property safety.

✔️ Keep construction materials, chemicals, food, and debris away from areas your pets can access.

And if you’re leaving town while the work continues, please tell us.

That information helps our pet sitters know what to watch for when they arrive.

This Is Where Professional Pet Sitting Makes a Difference

When you hire a professional pet sitter, you aren’t just hiring someone to walk through the door, fill a bowl, and leave.

We pay attention.

  • We look at the environment.
  • We notice changes.
  • We know what your pets normally do.

And when something looks different, we stop and investigate before we let your pets loose into an unfamiliar situation.

  • Is the gate where it normally sits?
  • Does the backyard look different?
  • Did someone leave something behind?
  • Is your dog acting normally?
  • Is your cat hiding somewhere unusual?
  • Did a contractor leave a door open?

Those details matter.

That’s one reason professional pet sitting in Lakeland, FL involves much more than simply loving animals.

It requires attention to detail, observation, communication, and a genuine understanding of the pets in our care.

Sometimes the most important thing a pet sitter does during a visit isn’t something you planned for.

It’s noticing the thing you didn’t know you needed us to notice.

Construction, Chicken Bones, and Curious Cats

We can’t stop a dog from believing that a discarded Publix chicken bone represents the greatest treasure in the history of mankind.

We can’t convince every cat that packing tape isn’t a toy.

And we certainly can’t control every contractor, delivery driver, landscaper, or repair person who enters your property.

But we can work together.

  • You tell us what’s changing.
  • We pay attention when we arrive.
  • Your contractors know your expectations.
  • And your pets get another layer of protection while you’re away.

If you’re looking for professional pet sitting in Lakeland, Mulberry, or Bartow, that’s the kind of detail-oriented care we believe your pets deserve.

Because your dog or cat may not understand what’s happening during your home project.

We do.

And we’re going to keep an eye out for them.

Thank you for trusting us with your furry family members. We appreciate your partnership—and your help in keeping them safe!

Happy Pets, Happy People!
